Record the outside dimensions
Check the frame's complete width and length, plus headboard and footboard height where relevant. Compare them with doors, windows and sockets. Mark the footprint on the floor and walk along both sides as you would at bedtime. Include a bedside table's opening and access to blinds. A room may accommodate the nominal mattress yet feel awkward with a broad frame around it. Do not rely on a photograph; look for a dimensioned drawing that includes the projecting parts as well as the sleeping surface.
Add up the occupied height
Consider frame, support and mattress together, checking how each component sits. Include a topper if used. Try a comparable height before purchasing where possible; sitting down and standing up matter more than following a decorative rule. Check the support required by your mattress and compatibility with the proposed slats, platform or base. Components are not automatically compatible because their width and length match. Mattress instructions may set particular support and ventilation conditions, which should be checked before the frame becomes difficult to return or change.
Storage needs extra clearance
For drawers, measure the fully open position and room to stand in front. For an ottoman base, examine raised height, mechanism and access according to the maker. Do not count a compartment as useful storage if reaching it requires moving the entire bed. Consider the effort involved in opening it and follow mechanism precautions. A low lamp or shelf can interfere with movement even when it sits outside the closed furniture footprint. Test the action in the room plan rather than treating storage capacity as a standalone benefit.
Check delivery and upkeep
Review package dimensions, stair access and assembly space. Decide who will build it and what tools or assistance are needed. Consider whether cleaning tools can reach underneath. If a future move is likely, ask about disassembly and retain instructions and spare fittings. Before confirming, revisit the plan with mattress, bedside furniture and doors in use. The purchase should produce a workable complete bed, not merely a rectangle fitting beside a wall while leaving everyday movements and maintenance to be solved later.
