Choosing between blackout and light-filtering curtains

Darkening a room for sleep and filtering daylight are different needs. Compare the fabric and its installation, because light can also enter around the edges.

Define the change you want

Observe the window in the morning, afternoon and with indoor lights switched on. You may want softer screen glare, more privacy or less light while sleeping. A light-filtering curtain can retain pleasant daylight without creating darkness. Blackout fabric aims to block light through the textile, but does not by itself guarantee a completely dark room. Write down the priority before choosing a colour. This lets you assess a sample against the real problem rather than only holding it beside the wall paint.

Check fabric and coverage

Where possible, examine a sample with light behind it and ask for the product's technical description. Review width, length and intended overlap, as well as space beside and above the track. An opaque panel that is too narrow can leave distracting gaps. Do not cover radiators or prevent the window opening to close those gaps. Installation needs to suit the opening, support and ventilation, rather than relying on extra fabric positioned wherever it happens to block light. A workable arrangement must still allow normal use of the window.

Consider different times of day

Two layers offer flexibility: one for filtering and another for darkening. In return, they require a suitable track, room to stack back and additional care. At a small window, the gathered fabric can reduce daylight even when open. Check where it will sit during the day. If considering a blind, inspect its mounting and mechanism safety, especially in a home with children. Keep cords inaccessible and follow the specified installation rather than improvising a different arrangement to make an unsuitable size fit.

Read care requirements before choosing

Blackout coatings and linings can impose washing restrictions. Do not assume every polyester curtain allows the same programme. Check whether the price includes one panel or a pair and whether shortening is required. Product photographs do not necessarily reveal transparency in your own light. Keep track measurements and read return conditions before ordering custom alterations. If the first option fails because coverage is insufficient, changing colour alone will not solve the light entering at the sides or above the rail.
