Decide what the drawer is for
Before emptying it, choose its purpose. It might hold stationery, entrance essentials or personal accessories. Things without a home is not a useful boundary: every new object will qualify. Choose a function broad enough for ordinary life but clear enough to recognise when an item belongs somewhere else.
Prepare a clear surface and a container for objects belonging in other rooms. Do not immediately walk around the house returning each item, because that interrupts the work. Finish the decisions about this drawer first, then make one return trip around the rooms. Keep the collection contained rather than spreading it across several surfaces.
Review without creating permanent piles
Empty the drawer and clean its base according to the material. Separate what will be used there, what belongs elsewhere and what needs repair or appropriate disposal. Test pens and check simple items now rather than preserving everything because it might still work. An uncertain object should not automatically earn a place back.
Do not discard another person's belongings without asking. Put them in an identified container for their owner to review. If you find something hazardous, such as a damaged battery or loose blade, remove it from everyday access and follow the relevant handling and disposal guidance instead of burying it again.
Return fewer things with room around them
Begin with frequently used items. Group them in small containers only when those make them easier to see and grasp. A stationery drawer might need an area for writing tools and another for paper fasteners; it does not require a separate compartment for every individual clip.
Check that tall objects do not catch the space above when the drawer closes. Leave some visible base and avoid layers that conceal their contents. If everything fits only when each piece sits at an exact angle, ordinary use will soon make the drawer jam again. Test taking out and returning the largest object.
Finish the whole job
Return displaced objects to their destinations and remove outgoing items from the room. The surface used to empty the drawer should end clear too. Record a specific repair if you intend to make it, and keep that object away from the everyday drawer while it waits.
After a few days, notice what starts creeping back in. It may reveal the need for another nearby storage spot. Address that problem without abandoning the purpose you have just given this drawer.
