Small spaces

Freeing space in a compact bathroom

A compact bathroom can improve substantially when daily products are separated from reserves. Before adding a tall cabinet or trolley, check what occupies the surfaces and what genuinely needs to stay close.

Clear the basin edge

Keep everyday items accessible and find suitable storage for duplicates and unopened containers. Group by person or activity in a shared bathroom. Do not store medicines or sensitive products where humidity and temperature conflict with their instructions.

A small tray makes lifting several items for cleaning easier, but it should not interfere with the tap. If it collects water, change the position or container. Organisation should not create another damp area that is difficult to maintain.

Check openings

Test the door, shower screen and drawers through their full movement. Even narrow furniture can obstruct getting out of the shower. Rehearse drying yourself and reaching the towel; these actions do not appear on a plan of closed objects.

When using the inside of a cupboard door, check that an accessory does not prevent closure or strike pipes and shelves. Respect loads and fixings. Do not improvise supports on surfaces or fittings that were not designed to carry them.

Avoid unnecessary floor storage

A small container may be enough for frequently needed reserves. Any added piece should allow cleaning around it without covering ventilation or maintenance access. Keep potential leaks visible rather than hiding them behind boxes.

Vertical solutions must remain reachable. Do not put daily items so high that using them requires standing on a sanitary fitting. Cabinets and mirrors need mounting appropriate to both the support and the damp environment.

Review after several days

Notice which products remain outside their assigned places. A category may be missing, or putting something away may involve an unnecessary step. Change one detail and assess the result before buying another organiser.

In a shared bathroom, make personal and communal spaces clear. A simple arrangement everyone can maintain often frees more surface than attractive containers without a defined purpose. Leave a little spare room for the item that is currently in use.
