Small spaces

Turning a corner into a workable desk

A corner can hold a useful desk if it lets you face your work and move the chair. Making use of an awkward space should not require working twisted between two walls.

Test the equipment layout first

Measure the laptop or monitor, keyboard, mouse and notebook you normally use. Reproduce the proposed surface on an existing table or a scale plan. A triangular desk may be deep at its centre but offer very little support where your forearm needs to rest.

Decide which way you will face. A monitor against one wall and keyboard against another can leave you repeatedly turning your body. Aim for a comfortable forward-facing arrangement and room to bring the chair close, without rails or drawers pushing your knees into an awkward position.

Allow the chair to move

Do not measure only with the chair tucked away. Sit down, move back and stand as you would during an ordinary working day. Check the route behind you and nearby doors. A corner suitable for leaving a laptop may not be suitable for spending several hours at it.

Inspect the space below as well. A wastebasket, bag and desktop computer tower all consume what appeared to be legroom. Give each an appropriate position before adding accessories, while preserving the ventilation required by your equipment.

Check light on the screen

Test reflections at the times you will actually work. A window directly behind you may appear on the monitor, while bright light straight ahead can be uncomfortable. Adjust orientation and use appropriate curtains or a lamp without blocking access to the window.

Position task lighting so your body does not cast a shadow over the page. Check that its base does not occupy the mouse area. An adjustable arm can free surface space if its attachment is compatible with the desk top and thickness.

Solve power before enclosing the corner

Find an accessible socket and route cables away from wheels and feet. Do not conceal them under rugs or chain extension leads together to reach further. Respect the stated ratings and obtain professional help if a new socket is needed.

Retain access for unplugging and cleaning. If fitting shelves, use fixings appropriate to the wall and intended load, following their instructions rather than guessing from appearance.
