Small spaces

Alternatives to a bulky bedside table

A large bedside table is optional, but a comfortable place for bedside essentials is not. Test alternatives against the mattress height and the room’s actual use.

Make a short list

Think about what you genuinely use: glasses, water, a book or a phone. Distinguish these from objects that landed there because they lacked another home. Reducing the contents may allow a smaller surface without losing convenience.

For personal items, a drawer may be more useful than an open shelf. Check that it opens from the appropriate side and that its handle does not strike the bed. External dimensions do not tell the whole access story.

Try different heights

A very low surface makes you bend; a high one can be awkward to reach while lying down. Use a stable box only as a visual and reach reference, without loading it heavily or treating it as permanent furniture.

Compare the position with the actual mattress rather than just the bed frame edge. Allow for an imminent mattress change if relevant. A side table can serve as a bedside table when its stability and surface suit the use.

Consider a shelf carefully

A shelf may free floor space but needs appropriate fixings and sufficient room for the intended objects. Check load, wall support and potential knocks when standing. Do not mount it with improvised adhesive simply to avoid drilling.

In a rental where fixing is not authorised, a freestanding solution may be easier. Avoid stacking unstable boxes or stools to reach the desired height. Space saving does not compensate for a surface that moves when you pick up a glass.

Resolve lighting and cables

A lamp with a small base leaves more tabletop but still needs to illuminate without glare. A wall light can free the surface if installation is feasible. In either case, check switch access and keep the cable from being trapped or crossing a route.

Leave space for bed-making and cleaning. If the compact alternative becomes surrounded by belongings on the floor, review the contents before searching for an even smaller piece.
