Home care

Keeping a mattress clean and dry

Cleaning a mattress is not a matter of wetting it until it looks new. Protection, prompt attention to spills and avoiding trapped moisture are more useful starting points.

Separate the cover, protector and core

An added mattress protector, the original outer cover and the mattress interior are different components. Their care can differ too. Find the model instructions before opening a zip: some covers are removable only for particular purposes, while others contain layers that cannot be washed. A care label on a protector does not authorise washing the core. If the instructions are unclear, leave the original cover in place and contact the manufacturer rather than exposing the filling simply to investigate its construction.

Inspect when changing the sheets

Use this opportunity to look at seams, edges and the area beside the headboard. Where vacuuming is permitted, use a clean upholstery attachment and suitable suction without catching threads. Inspect the bed base as well, moving belongings that hide it from view. There is no need to add fragrance or powder to make the task feel complete. An odour that returns deserves investigation, particularly when the room is damp or a drink has recently been spilled on the bed.

From spill to complete drying

Remove wet bedding promptly and absorb surface moisture with dry cloths, avoiding pressure that pushes it deeper. The next treatment depends on the material. Do not saturate foam, improvise steam cleaning or combine stain removers. Check the method approved for that model. If substantial liquid has penetrated, describe the situation to the manufacturer or an appropriate professional. A surface that feels dry does not establish that the inside is dry, or that any contamination has been removed from the filling.

Do not cover a damp area again with a waterproof protector. Ventilate the room appropriately and follow the drying instructions without directing intense heat at the mattress. Arrange somewhere else to sleep if it will not be ready that evening. In a damp home, examine the support and surroundings as well as the mattress itself. Persistent marks beneath the bed or a musty smell are not solved by washing sheets more often; there may be an underlying moisture problem requiring assessment.

Choose protection you can maintain

Select a protector compatible with the mattress and check that you can actually wash and dry it with the equipment available. A spare makes dealing with a spill easier without leaving the bed unprotected for several days. Rotate or turn the mattress only as instructed: a single-sided model should not be treated like a reversible one. Keep the model name and care sheet. They are more valuable than a universal routine that ignores the particular foam, cover construction or bed base underneath.
