What changes when you use terracotta pots

Terracotta changes more than a plant's appearance. Its porosity, weight and behaviour outdoors affect watering and the places where a pot will work well.

Stacked terracotta pots

Separate unglazed clay from sealed finishes

An unglazed terracotta pot can lose moisture through its walls, so its growing medium often dries more quickly than in a less porous container. That does not create a universal watering schedule. The plant, temperature, light and size of the root ball still matter.

A glossy surface may indicate a different finish, but check the container description. Not every reddish pot behaves like unglazed clay: some are plastic and others have surface treatments. The actual material and the openings in its base are more useful information than its colour alone.

Learn the new drying pattern

When moving a plant from plastic into clay, use the plant's needs as your starting point and observe the new pot over the following weeks. Check the growing medium before watering. Carefully lifting a small pot can help you learn the difference between wet and dry weight, without treating weight as the only test.

The edges may dry while the centre remains moist. Adding a little water daily simply because the surface looks pale can therefore be misleading. Water when appropriate for the particular species and let excess water escape, rather than leaving the base submerged in a full saucer.

Look after the surface underneath

Clay can transfer moisture and leave marks on furniture or delicate flooring. Use a suitable saucer and surface protection, then check underneath after watering. A decorative dish is not necessarily waterproof, so establish that before trusting it on a wooden table or windowsill.

On a balcony, include the weight of the filled, wet pot in your planning. Do not choose a much larger container merely because it appears steadier. Structural limitations and wind exposure need consideration before you arrange a group of heavy planters.

Consider winter at the buying stage

Cold resistance depends on the particular pot and its conditions. Check the manufacturer's classification and care instructions if it will remain outdoors through frost. Ordinary fired clay should not automatically be expected to cope with trapped water freezing inside it.
