Check usable height first
Measure where people walk and stand up from seats. Beams, slopes and light fittings may reduce clearance in particular places. A pendant that works above a table may be unsuitable over the main route.
Do not rely on an object looking delicate if it physically intrudes into movement. Choose lighting and furniture around the heights and actions of the people using the room. Under sloping ceilings, reserve the lowest areas for activities compatible with that limitation.
Simplify some lines
A continuous curtain line or low piece of furniture can leave more wall visible. This may contribute to a sense of space without becoming a rule for every object. If you already own useful tall shelving, simplifying its contents may help more than replacing it.
Avoid adding decorative bands without a clear intention. A strong colour change near the ceiling can emphasise its boundary; sometimes that feels cosy and sometimes it is not the effect you want. Test samples before extending the treatment across the whole room.
Distribute light thoughtfully
One intense central source can leave less comfortable corners. Combine lighting suited to activities with sufficient general illumination. Watch reflections and shadows on the actual ceiling, especially if it has irregularities you do not want to emphasise.
Respect the fitting’s stated clearances from nearby surfaces and materials. Limited height does not justify forcing in a lamp that needs more room. A compact model may be more appropriate than trying to adapt a hanging fitting.
Give enjoyable features some attention
An appealing texture, a clear window or a picture can draw the eye without extreme visual tricks. Look from your usual seat; many decisions are experienced at that level rather than from a standing wide-angle photograph.
If the room is both small and low, leave some surfaces empty. Accumulated objects may contribute more to a cramped feeling than a few centimetres of ceiling height. Try removing one piece before changing the colour of the entire room.
