Gentle lighting for evenings on the balcony

A soft light near the seat is often more pleasant than illuminating every corner of a balcony. Start by identifying where you need to see your way and where you simply want a welcoming atmosphere.

Test from the seat and indoors

Lighting that looks attractive from the street can glare into a seated person's eyes. Temporarily position a suitable lamp and check whether the light source is directly visible. Look from the living room too: a reflected string of lights may dominate the glass and the room behind it.

Keep the route to the door visible and avoid hiding the floor between very bright areas. Conversation rarely needs intense lighting. A light directed towards a nearby surface can create atmosphere without pointing into neighbouring windows or the eyes of someone opposite.

Check every component's outdoor suitability

The fitting must suit the actual exposure. Read the full instructions, including those for transformers, connectors and cables. Bulbs being suitable outdoors does not mean every plug or adaptor can also remain in the rain.

Do not trap a cable in a door or hide connections underneath a rug. Route equipment away from footsteps, abrasion and water as its design requires. For a fixed installation or uncertainty about appropriate electrical protection, consult a qualified electrician and the applicable local requirements rather than improvising the connection.

Plan charging and switching

A portable lamp avoids some cables while in use, but still needs a charging and storage routine. Check its stated running time, charging conditions and whether it should come indoors afterwards. A battery does not automatically make an indoor lamp suitable for outdoor use.

Solar lights depend on the panel's exposure and the season. A shaded balcony may provide less charge than expected. Consider the panel's position without moving it onto an unsafe edge simply to gain a few additional minutes of sunshine. Trial the light through an ordinary evening before relying on it.

Keep decoration maintainable

Before hanging string lights, plan compatible attachments and access for removal. Avoid loose ends that wind could make strike nearby surfaces or become tangled. Turn the lights off when they are not needed and consider whether their brightness disturbs other homes.
