Choosing a pot for its inner dimensions

A pot's advertised diameter may be measured across the outside rim, which tells you little about whether the root ball will fit. Inspect the internal space before choosing by silhouette.

Separate the growing pot from its cover

If you want a decorative cover for an existing nursery pot, measure that inner container first. Include its rim, height and any saucer that needs to fit inside. You should be able to insert and remove it without forcing foliage aside or pulling on the plant.

Retain enough access to inspect the bottom and remove water. An overly tight fit can make an ordinary task awkward every time you water. Check dimensions physically when possible: a broad opening may taper sharply towards a much narrower base.

Measure depth and shape

Two pots with the same top diameter may provide very different volumes. A tall, narrow vessel does not behave like a shallow, broad one. For direct planting, check the proportions appropriate to the species and inspect its drainage openings.

Avoid choosing a huge volume simply to postpone future repotting. The relationship between roots and the amount of growing medium affects moisture management. A size increase should respond to the plant's condition and cultivation, rather than the empty corner you want to fill in the room.

Consider lifting the finished arrangement

The empty pot in a shop may feel manageable but become difficult once filled with plant, medium and water. Examine handles, the rim and the route to wherever you water. A container requiring two people to move needs a different maintenance plan from a small windowsill plant.

On balconies, consider the whole arrangement within the building's limitations. Weight is not resolved by scattering pots at random or assuming a container is safe because it physically fits. Obtain appropriate advice before buying for a large installation.

Keep the useful measurements

Record internal diameter, available height and the nursery pot's size. When buying online, look for a dimensioned drawing or ask the seller for missing information. A photograph containing a large plant does not establish how much usable space lies inside the vessel.
