Sofa cushions that do more than add colour

Cushions should help you sit comfortably rather than make you clear the sofa every time. Choose their number, shape and fabric around the seating you use, then work on colour.

Cushions of different sizes on a sofa

Sit down before arranging them

A deep sofa may benefit from support behind your back, while a shallow seat loses space beneath bulky fillings. Test the cushions you already own first. Work out whether you need lower-back support, somewhere for an arm or simply a more pleasant surface to lean against.

There is no correct number for every sofa. When several people sit together, notice how many cushions end up on the floor. That everyday movement tells you more than a photograph of perfectly layered upholstery. Give the ones you remove when lying down a realistic resting place.

Mix sizes without sacrificing use

A pair of larger shapes with a smaller one can create depth, but a simpler arrangement of similar sizes can work equally well. What matters is that they do not hide the entire backrest or push the person sitting forward onto the seat edge.

A rectangular cushion can sit in front of a square one if the filling offers the firmness you want. Do not assume any insert will suit a new cover. Compare dimensions and the cover’s recommendations; an oversized insert can strain seams and zips rather than create a pleasingly full shape.

Let one fabric lead

On a plain sofa, one patterned cover can suggest two supporting colours. If the upholstery already has a pattern, a simple texture may provide visual rest. Compare the actual fabrics in the room’s light instead of choosing solely by a colour name.

Check how the material feels against a bare arm, including potentially uncomfortable sequins, hard buttons or rough edging. A decorative cushion may suit an occasionally used chair, but the main sofa deserves surfaces that feel pleasant during ordinary use.

Think through the whole wash

A washable cover does not mean the insert can also be washed. Read both labels and consider drying time. Delicate fabrics or specialist cleaning can be reasonable choices if you accept their upkeep. In a busy household, fewer easy-care pieces may be more comfortable than a fragile collection.
